Family Foster Care Program Overview Some children who need care outside their own homes are best served by a caring foster home that can provide them with the individual attention they need to develop and grow healthy. Based in offices across the state, family foster care workers recruit, train, and support foster families and the children in their care. Regional foster care offices are located in Glendale, Mt. Washington, Owensboro, Somerset, Ivel, Morehead and . Satellite offices are also located in Lexington, Danville, Hazard, Bowling Green, Whitley City, London, and Paducah. Family Foster Care is a service of Sunrise Children's Services which provides residential treatment, counseling, and adoption services and foster care. Sunrise is licensed by the Kentucky Cabinet for Health and Family Services and has provided services to families since 1869. The Children In Care Family Foster Care serves children and youth spanning a wide age range who are facing an array of problems. The children typically come from backgrounds of abuse or neglect. Some are pre-school and elementary-age children who have severe emotional difficulties stemming from abuse. Others are teenagers who have accomplished goals in Sunrise residential programs and are making a transition into family living. The Foster Families Foster parents are individuals or families who have made a commitment to provide care and who are willing to be trained to meet the special needs of children in foster care. Married couples or single adults can serve as foster parents. The minimum age for foster parents is 21. They and their home must meet licensing standards required by the state and Sunrise Children's Services. Though the house itself must meet certain safety standards, a showplace is not expected. Caring and understanding are the most important furnishings of a Sunrise Children's Services foster home. Foster parents must have the personal qualities and relationship-building skills needed to work effectively with children, parents, social service personnel, and foster care staff. Families who can provide homes for older children, sibling groups, and children who have emotional difficulties stemming from abuse are especially needed. In return, Sunrise foster families can expect to receive high-quality, professional 24/7 on-call support, frequent telephone contact and in-home visits by experienced foster care specialists, flexible options for ongoing training that uses an outcomes-based treatment model, competitive reimbursement rates and referral bonuses.
