The Glen Dale Center, located in Elizabethtown, Kentucky, is Sunrise's second longest operating program, established in 1915. The program serves up to 20 girls, ages 12 to 18, in need of specialized treatment and care. The girl's school education is provided on-site by the Elizabethtown Independent Schools.
The majority of the girls come from backgrounds of severe abuse or neglect. Caring staff work with the girls through regular individual counseling, group counseling, therapeutic activities and outings to help them deal with their individual issues. Intensive group work enables the girls to learn essential socialization, coping, and anger management skills to begin the process of overcoming their pasts and taking control of their futures. Service projects and outings help the girls master key life skills so critical for becoming whole, happy adults.
For girls who do not reunite with their families, because of the family situation, Sunrise provides a full spectrum of care options, including Sunrise's Foster Care program.
In 2010, the Glen Dale Program cared for 62 girls, providing 6,056 days of care.
We invite you to take a tour of our Glendale Program.
Glen Dale girls engage in a variety of learning activities, including classes on crocheting and scrapbooking. The girls maintain a small vegetable garden and use the vegetables to create their own dishes.
Each young woman has an individualized treatment and case plan. The girls work through a phased advancement program that recognizes emotional and behavioral progress.
The Glen Dale Center is one of the first Sunrise programs to implement the Risking Connection treatment model. Staff received extensive training through group trainings, written study modules and one-on-one coaching. Staff were trained to mentor children and each staff was assigned a small group of children to learn more about their past and to find an individually focused way to earn the child's trust and build a relationship based on mutual respect and support. Results have been enormously positive, with successful program completions and placements either in foster care or with family members.

Girls enjoy nearby entertainment venues
During the month of August, the Glendale girls were quite busy. They started out the month of August with a back to school cookout. The staff prepared a barbeque and the girls enjoyed the meal and played outdoor games. They also got to spend a day at Russell Sims Aquatic Center in Bowling Green and had a blast on the water slides. In addition, they went to Kart Country in Shepherdsville, went bowling, skating, and watched movies at the Movie Palace. However, the highlight of the month was going to the Kentucky State Fair. Despite the heat and the crowds, the girls still managed to have a wonderful time. They rode rides, visited the exhibits, and of course enjoyed eating the great fair food!
