Residential Services for teenage girls, ages 12 to 18
Program Overview
The Glen Dale Center is Sunrise Children's Services's second longest-operating program, established in 1915 and was originally known as Kentucky Baptist Children's Home. Originally located in rural Hardin County, the program moved into a brand new facility in Elizabethtown on July 9, 2009.
The Girls In Care
Glen Dale Center serves up to 20 girls, ages 12 to 18, who are in need of special therapeutic care. They typically come from backgrounds of severe abuse or neglect. The girls often have an attitude of defeat and hopelessness when they arrive. A common thread that runs through almost all of the situations is the abandonment - either physical or emotional - that the girls feel.
How The Girls Are Helped
Caring staff work with the girls through regular counseling sessions to help them build self-esteem and confidence. The girls participate in intensive group work to enable them to begin the process of overcoming their pasts and taking control of their futures. Such a process teaches the girls to be accountable not only for their own conduct, but that they help themselves most when they reach out to the other girls in the group. Onsite education is provided by Elizabethtown Independent Schools.
