Dr. William K. Smithwick, President and CEO

Bill Smithwick joined Sunrise Children's Services in April 1997 as the agency’s president and chief executive officer. He previously held the position of assistant executive director for programs and administration for Virginia Baptist Children’s Home and Family Services.

Bill earned a doctor of ministry degree from St. Mary’s Seminary and University in Baltimore; a bachelor of arts degree and a master of business administration degree from Averett College in Danville, Va.; and a master of divinity degree from Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary in Wake Forest, N.C.

He has a wealth of experience in working with programs to help troubled children, having served as chaplain of Virginia Baptist Children’s Home and Family Services prior to taking on the administrative role he had there. He also worked for a three-year period as a management consultant for Southeastern Employers Services Co. in Bristol, Tenn.

The Bowling Green, Fla., native has also held student, bi-vocational and full-time pastorates in Virginia Baptist churches.

He lives in Louisville. Bill, his wife, and their children are members of Walnut Street Baptist Church in Louisville.

 

Brandi Felser, Chief Development Officer

Brandi Felser joined Sunrise in May 2010 as the Chief Development Officer. In this role Brandi oversees the fundraising, marketing and communications for the organization.

Brandi’s previous experience includes working in the international community on issues affecting the world economy, with a non-profit that partnered with government agencies to combat substance abuse at the community level, and most recently for a legislative/advocacy organization headquartered on Capitol Hill. She has over 14 years experience working in the development, communications and marketing fields.

Brandi relocated to Kentucky from the Washington, DC metro area. Brandi earned her undergraduate degree at Eastern Kentucky University and her MBA at The George Washington University in Washington, DC.

 

Guy Goodner, Chief Financial Officer

Guy Goodner joined Sunrise in November 2009. As the Chief Financial Officer, he is responsible for all financial affairs and facilities’ management functions. He provides financial input for the Agency’s strategic objectives and coordinates capital planning.

Goodner has over thirty years of corporate finance experience, and was most recently employed by Lexmark International. Prior to Lexmark he held the CFO position with two startup companies, and had been Vice President and Treasurer for Findlay Industries in Findlay, Ohio, and Treasurer for Clark Material Handling Co., in Lexington.

In addition to his duties at Sunrise, Goodner is also an adjunct professor for Indiana Wesleyan University’s MBA program at its Louisville and Lexington locations.

Goodner has a B.A. from Westminster College, Fulton, MO. and a MBA from the University of Missouri, Columbia, MO. He and his wife Linda live in Georgetown, Ky., with their two college age children.

 

Karen Hamilton, Chief Operating Officer

Karen Hamilton has been with Sunrise Children's Services since 1996. In her role as Chief Operating Officer, Hamilton manages the ministry’s day-to-day operations. She is responsible for the effective administration, growth and development of program services as well as providing oversight to the agency’s support systems at the central office. Hamilton also serves as chair of the Children's Alliance.

Hamilton has more than 15 years of experience in senior leadership positions. Prior to joining Sunrise, she was in charge of Human Resources for a national restaurant company headquartered in Louisville.

Outside of her role with Sunrise, Hamilton serves on the school board for her children's school in Louisville.


Beverly Hite, Vice President for Residential Services

Beverly oversees Sunrise Children's Services’s seven residential campuses: Spring Meadows, Glen Dale, Genesis Home, Dixon Center, Baptist Youth Ranch, Morehead Center and Wilderness Camping Program.

Beverly previously served as program director for Sunrise's Spring Meadows Children's Home in Louisville. She completed her master's and undergraduate work at the University of Louisville. Prior to joining Sunrise, Beverly was coordinator for student leadership programs in U of L's Student Life department, providing training and advisement to student organizations in conflict resolution, interpersonal skills and other areas.


Lee Martin, Vice President for Specialized Programs

Lee joined Sunrise Children's Service when Sunrise purchased the Children's and Family Services programs from Christian Care Communities of Louisville in November, 2007. He had worked for Christian Care for 7 years as Executive Director of the Woodlawn Children's Campus in Danville and the IMPACT Plus program in Henderson, KY. He is responsible for IMPACT Plus services headquartered in Danville and in Owensboro, crisis stabilization services to boys and girls ages 6-17 years old and two Psychiatric Residential Treatment Facilities (PRTF's) on the Danville campus for boys ages 6-12 years old.

A Roanoke, Virginia native, Lee has over 35 years of experience in business and working in the mental health field particularly with troubled children and their families. After his graduation from Virginia Tech with a degree in Marketing, he worked for over 11 years in market research with Blue Cross Blue Shield in Virginia. He subsequently moved with his family to Kentucky to attend seminary at Asbury Theological Seminary and graduate school at the University of Kentucky where he got his Master of Divinity and Master in Social Work degrees from the respective schools. Lee has worked as an Licensed Clinical Social Worker in community mental health agencies and with Charter Ridge Hospital in Lexington, KY as a therapist and later, as Director of Social Services.

Lee resides in Wilmore, KY with his wife of 30 years and they have two grown children, Ryan and Emily. He is one of the founding Board members of CASA at Woodlawn and serves on the Board of the Kentucky School for the Deaf Charitable Foundation. He is a member of the Danville Rotary Club and attends Southland Christian Church in Lexington, KY.


David Turner, Vice President for Support Services

David Turner was named vice president for Support Services in February 2004. In this role, he oversees the information technology, quality assurance, performance improvement, intake services, marketing, and religious life for the agency. Prior to taking on this role, David was vice president for Child Placement Services.

David is a highly accomplished administrator and clinical social worker with 15 years' experience working in training, counseling, human resources and facility management in a variety of settings. he served as program director for Sunrise's Spring Meadows Children's Home from 1998 to 2000. Most recently, he was using his knowledge and experience to consult with health and childcare agencies. Since 1998, he has provided outpatient counseling services to clients through the Lifecare Counseling Center, a ministry of Louisville's Walnut Street Baptist Church.

David is a graduate of the University of Alabama and The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, where he earned a master's degree in social work.

David and his wife have two children who were both adopted from the Ukraine. They've been members of Walnut Street Baptist Church, where David serves as a deacon, since 1994.


Elizabeth Wessels, Vice President for Foster Care and Community Based Services

As Sunrise's vice president for Foster Care/Community Based Services, Elizabeth Wessels oversees the ministry's statewide therapeutic foster care program, Adoption Services, Cornerstone Counseling offices, and the Youth Support Center.

Wessels is an accomplished administrator with experience in management and clinical supervision to multi-disciplinary community-based providers. Prior to her work at Sunrise, she directed the admissions and community-based programs at Brooklawn Child and Family Services in Louisville, where she began work in 1996 as a clinical supervisor.

A Licensed Clinical Social Worker, Wessels also has experience as a private practitioner and as a staff therapist with Kilgore Samaritan Counseling Center in Louisville.
