Residential Services for teenage boys, ages 14 to 18

The Cumberland Adventure Program is located in Bronston, near Somerset, in Pulaski County in southern Kentucky. The program serves up to 56 boys who need care outside of their own homes.
It is a ministry of Sunrise Children's Services which provides residential, counseling, adoption, foster care, and independent living services throughout Kentucky. Founded in 1869, Sunrise is the largest private residential child care agency in Kentucky and the oldest Southern Baptist child care ministry. Sunrise is licensed by the Kentucky Cabinet for Health and Family Services.
The Cumberland Adventure Program works with boys between the ages of 14 and 18 who can benefit from learning the discipline and teamwork needed in making trips into Kentucky's wilderness areas. Many of the youth have come from backgrounds of abuse and neglect and most have developed emotional and/or behavioral problems.
This high-intensity, six-month program helps teen-aged boys who have had troubled pasts find a new lease on life. With a full-service campus in Bronston, Kentucky (near Somerset,) small groups of boys and counselors embark for increasingly-longer hiking, camping, and canoeing trips. As the young men learn to survive in Kentucky's wilderness areas with coping skills learned during individual and group therapy, they learn teamwork, build self-esteem, and develop a respect for other people and God's world.
While in care, the young people attend school, learn to make appropriate life decisions and work with adults to plan for the future. The overall goal is to help the young men get control of their daily lives as they learn to translate wilderness survival skills into skills for daily living.
