Youth Support Center, London, KY

Program Overview

The Youth Support Center is located in London on what was once the Sue Bennett College campus. The program is designed to help young people make the transition from out-of-home care back into their communities.

It is a ministry of Sunrise Children's Services which provides residential, counseling, adoption, foster care, and independent living services throughout Kentucky. Founded in 1869, Sunrise is the largest private residential child care agency in Kentucky and the oldest Southern Baptist child care ministry. Sunrise is licensed by the Kentucky Cabinet for Health and Family Services.

The Teens In Care

The Youth Support Center works with teenagers recently discharged from residential care or the juvenile justice system. It is also a preventive program for youth whose environment or behavior makes them vulnerable for problems that could bring about removal from their homes.

How Teens Are Helped

The months following a child’s release from the structure of residential care are critical. Without support, many teens find themselves back in residential treatment or juvenile justice facilities. This program is designed to be the net that prevents these kids from falling through the cracks.

The Sunrise Youth Support Center is open from 2 p.m. until 9 p.m. daily and will also have a Saturday schedule. Tutoring is available for youth in school and those studying for the GED.

Physical activity and spiritual development are two other priorities. The teenagers participate in a daily regimen of cognitive, emotional, spiritual and physical activities. The counseling the teens received while in residential care continues at The Youth Support Center. There are anger management therapy groups and groups for those dealing with substance abuse. Service projects are also used to help transition the young people back into their communities.

While the youth are in the support center programs, clinicians meet with them weekly at their schools to monitor progress and behavior. Services continue when a teenager "graduates" from the support center. Workers go into the homes up to 90 days following graduation to make sure everything is still on track.

The goal is to help the kids assimilate back into the mainstream.

The Youth Support Center was made possible through donations to Sunrise’s Building A Brighter Future campaign which has funded an array of services to Southern Kentucky. The $2.7 million campaign built two residential facilities in rural Pulaski County, established a foster care program and helped support Cornerstone Counseling, Sunrise Children's Services statewide outpatient counseling service for single adults, couples and families.
