Since the inception of its foster-to-adopt program in 2006, Sunrise Children’s Services has celebrated more than 400 adoptions. "Religion that is pure and undefiled before God, the Father, is this: to visit orphans and widows in their affliction, and to keep oneself unstained from the world." - James 1:2. In the Bible, "visit" is much deeper and more active of a verb than the English would suggest. It means to look after, have a care for, provide for, and furnish with necessary things. There are few more significant ways to care for a child than to take him into your home and give him a family. Children waiting in the U.S. foster care system age from infants to young adults. The average age for Sunrise kids is 11. Many of these children have siblings in the system and they shouldn’t be separated. Most foster children are perfectly healthy children who simply need and deserve loving and supportive adults in their lives.
Sunrise has worked to preserve, protect, and promote the "Forever Family" mindset since our very beginning in 1869. Then, we were called to provide protection and hope to orphans living on the streets of Louisville. Today, that ministry mindset has grown to encompass every level of care both in and out of the home. This is accomplished through the Foster-to-Adopt ministry, where we connect families who are called to open their hearts and homes to a child in need.
We work with families who partner with us and understand that giving children up for adoption can be a loving alternative for parents. For various reasons, some parents may be unable to care for their own children. It can also be an answer to prayer for many couples who have not been able to have children of their own. For some, adoption is a calling to multiply their impact as parents by expanding their family with children who are not their own biologically.
Just last year alone, Sunrise finalized more than 50 “Forever Family” adoptions. We are working with many more families that are in the final stages of adoption. If you are interested in learning more about our Foster-to-Adopt ministry, we are eager to discuss the benefits and challenges of opening your home to a child in need. We help begin the process of praying and planning about what God has possibly called you to do.
We recognize there is something exceptionally special about having children by birth, but there is also something distinctively precious about adopting children. Each adoption has its own uniqueness. Your choice to adopt can be as precious and significant as having children by birth. God is able to make adoption the best option in our lives if we open ourselves to His love.
The ministry of foster care and Foster-to-Adopt are very special because they challenge us to be what God has called us to be as individuals, as families, and as the church. Foster-to-Adopt will be one of the most challenging and rewarding things you are ever called to do. There is initial training, paperwork, more paperwork, regulations, ongoing training, and opening your home to many different people as you and your family undergo the process and support of caring for a child that is not your own.
Sunrise has been actively involved in helping others realize God’s calling on their life and supporting them in this ministry of love in a vulnerable child’s life. Are you ready to put ministry in motion and open your heart and home to one of life’s greatest blessings and the fulfillment of God’s plan? If yes, please contact us below and set up an appointment to discuss your questions.
